Enugu LG Polls: Three feared dead as unknown gunmen attack polling units


Unknown gunmen, Wednesday, disrupted voting exercise at two polling units, as residents of Enugu State filed out to participate in the local government election.

The poll was conducted in the 17 local government area of the State.

DAILY POST reports that the exercise progressed peacefully across the State until news filtered in that unknown gunmen, who were against the conduct of any form of election, were wrecking havoc in Obeagu area of the State.

It was learnt that the gunmen invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

They were said to have disrupted the exercise, destroying electoral materials after chasing away voters.

Sources claimed that three persons were killed, while some others escaped with matchet cuts. At least two vehicles were also burnt in the incident.

Some journalists caught in the crossfire are said to be receiving treatment at the moment in the hospital.

An eyewitness who did not want his name in print said “the gunmen were shouting that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East.”

The police are yet to issue official reaction on the reported attack as of the time of filing this report.

DAILY POST reports that unknown gunmen, had in the past few weeks, killed a number of policemen within the same axis.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State was earlier at his polling unit in Amube, Orba, Udenu Local Government Area of the State where he cast his vote at about some minutes past 11 a.m.

Voting was also concluded peacefully in other parts of the State in record time
